Construction on Harewood House began in 1759. Not long after, the Lascelles family began accepting visitors who were interested in the unique architecture and the surrounding countryside. Today's visitors can still experience the sights and sounds of those days, while enjoying attractions that have been added in recent years. What to See
Items of interests in the house include Chippendale furniture and a number of paintings by masters of the Italian Renaissance. Outside in the gardens, you can walk along the Terrace, designed by Sir Charles Barry in the 1840s.
The Bird Garden is home to 100 species, including penguins at some times of the year. In the Himalayan Garden, you will find a Buddhist Stupa, as well as beautiful flowering plants and trees.
There is more to the estate than Harewood House itself. You will want to tour the home, the gardens and the grounds. Time permitting, you may want to visit Plumpton Rocks, too, a nearby attraction that has been the subject of several paintings currently hanging in the house.
You and your children will enjoy the Adventure Playground, which is suitable for kids of all ages and large enough to accommodate school groups. All through the summer, you will find special outdoor events at Harewood House. There is truly something for everyone.
Getting There
From points within the UK, you can travel by foot, car, rail or coach to Yorkshire, where the estate is located. Hikers will be familiar with the Leeds Country Way footpath, which passes through the estate, just south of the house and lake.
The M1 Motorway provides the fastest access to Yorkshire for a motor vehicle. Hertz Rental Car operates in Yorkshire. Other options include Europcar, which is based at the York Station, and Greenmotion in Bradford.
Coaches are available from major cities like London, York and Leeds. Traveling by high speed rail is one of the most popular options. From the station, you can continue your journey by hire car, or take a bus to the Harewood House estate.

You will find lodging in Yorkshire for every budget and preference. Whether you are interested in a luxury hotel or a campsite, you'll be pleased with all of the choices, unless you have trouble making decisions.
