What to Expect With Collagen Injections Friday, December 24, 2010
One type of cosmetic procedure that has become popular is collagen injections. They were developed in the 1970s, originally from bovine collagen. Since that time, many types of collagen have been developed and the uses have expanded. It is important a patient knows what to expect when going to get this procedure done.
Uses for Collagen Injections
These treatments have many uses. They are used to fill in lips, reduce wrinkles, fill in facial scars from acne and to treat fine lines. The effectiveness and use for collagen injection depends on what it is used for. There are certain types of scarring and wrinkles that this technique does not work as well on, and another treatment option can be recommended in these instances.
Types of Collagen Injections
Although collagen injections were originally developed from bovine, there are many types available now. Some of the products currently available are still bovine derived while others are derived from human bioengineering. There are also other products available that are injectable and serve a similar purpose to collagen. These alternatives include synthetic products, which last longer but are more likely to produce an allergic reaction.
Other types of filler products similar to collagen are fascia, dermalogen, autologen and hylaform, to name a few. These are all natural types of filler, which greatly reduces the chance of an allergic reaction. However, as they are natural the effect is only temporary. Thus far, the only type of filler injection deemed potentially permanent is fat injections as they can be adopted by surrounding tissue.
What to Expect
There are several things a person who is getting these treatments can expect from this procedure. First of all, the effect of most types of collagen injections is only temporary. There are certain synthetic collagens that are longer-lasting but come with the risk of allergic reaction.
A patient should expect redness around the injection site and in some cases, bruising and swelling. Many times, the doctor will numb the site before. In most cases these symptoms will disappear relatively quickly and there is little danger from infection from this procedure. As long as a patient has been through the allergen testing prior to the procedure, there is a small chance of allergic reaction as well.
A person getting collagen injections should understand that they are not generally permanent, and may need to be done several times per year to maintain the appearance they create. The only injectables that occasionally may remain permanent are fat injections.
Collagen injection patients should take an allergen test before the cosmetic surgery. If an allergic reaction is detected, the patient should not use that collagen filler in the cosmetic procedure. Go to docshop.com for more information on this procedure as well as others such as laser hair removal.

Chess Turns Out to Be Surprisingly Fun
I have to admit, I never thought I would learn to play chess. The game gets a bad rap, especially on TV shows and in movies. Let's face it; it's never a bunch of cool kids whenever they show the chess club and it always leads to bunch of bad stereotypes.
My first venture in to the game of chess came at age eighteen. My brother was home for the weekend from school and asked if I wanted to play him. I laughed and let him know that wouldn't be happening any time soon. But my brother being who he is, he persisted and I ended up relenting to his imploring.
As we sat down to the chess board, I was not expecting much. Honestly, I thought it was going to be more like checkers when I looked at the board. How wrong I was. It was nothing like checkers! All of the different pieces enthralled me and caught my imagination. And how they moved, this was truly a new and exciting experience for me. It was a game of strategy and I was immediately hooked. In fact, I was the one who ended up doing the pestering to play chess from then on, although he never complained.
It never gets old for me. There's always a new strategy to try and no reason to follow the same pattern. No other game provides the constant promise of combining moves and game pieces in an attack manner that differs each time I sit down at a chess board. Sometimes I sacrifice my pawns to pave the way for my more important pieces to assail my opponent. Other times I like to let my knights go charging ahead of the pack to see just how much damage I can do with those two pieces. I like to have fun with it, never forgetting why I became hooked on the game.
This game lets you be creative and actually use your mind. It's not just a bunch of button pushing and loud noises, which are all videogames are these days. It allows true face-to-face interaction with another player. The game forces you to see your opponent, hear your opponent, and study your opponent. When was the last time that a videogames was able to give you that? So give it a try if you haven't already. You won't be disappointed.

Learning in Leeds Monday, December 13, 2010
During the twentieth century Leeds, previously known as a merchant city, also started earning a reputation as a centre of learning. By the end of the twentieth century, Leeds already had more than 500 different categories of educational institutions including universities, colleges, schools, and technical training centres in and around the city. Some of them like the Metropolitan Leeds University, the Open University in Yorkshire, and Leeds University are household names. Aspiring students will not find it difficult to gather information on prospective universities or educational institutions since all information relating to these items is available through the online directories for visitors to the city. In these directories, information relating accommodation, courses of study and all related topics are available. In fact a visitor is only a mouse click or keystroke away from a great future in Leeds.
The Metropolitan University of Leeds, also known as the Leeds Met, has been nominated for the Times Higher Education Supplement's University of the Year award for the year 2006. It has also been nominated for the outstanding contribution to the local community award for development work. The university hosted a lecture by Professor Lori Beckett entitled 'The Curriculum Imagination' on the 5th October 2006 which happens to be the inaugural day of the University itself. The event took place in the Lecture Theatre of the E. James Graham Building, situated at the Headingley Campus. This university accommodates students from not only England but all over the world. This year the university is also holding its centenary celebration since it has now completed a century of teaching in Leeds. The university is located at Calverley St, Leeds, at a distance of 0.3 miles to the north of Leeds city. The university is widely acclaimed for its standard and novel ideologies and houses thousands of overseas students.
A novel innovation by Leeds Met is the Leeds Universities Crime Reduction Partnership which provides a unique way to protect the students against possible crimes. The move has been applauded world wide and by the British Government. There are several collaborators in this process including the Street Crime Initiative for West Yorkshire, representatives from Leeds Met, the Students Union, the authorities of the University itself, members from Leeds University Union, representatives from West Yorkshire Police and also Unipol Leeds who have joined hands in a partnership to fight crime and provide a safe environment for students who study at Leeds Universities. The system includes high visibility policing by university security staff and West Yorkshire Police in student areas. A major achievement has been obtaining funds from the Home Office for the project and for an extended bus service. There are 56 bus routes that give the students an affordable and safe way to get home late at night. Leeds City Council has also extended its cooperation for the project by widening CCTV coverage near the universities. The system is not only novel but potentially very fruitful too, since a recent survey revealed that at least one in every three students is a victim of crime in Leeds. Leeds has therefore become a national leader in developing this effective forum to fight crime. The Walksafe plan introduced for student safety is something lots of others are trying to emulate worldwide.
The Open University in Yorkshire is part of the national Open University organisation. It is open to new people, places, methods and ideas while providing high quality university education to students. One very good thing about this university is that local guides and staff are available to provide support to students when required. The Open University in Yorkshire has 70 staff and 500 part time tutors. These staff and tutors support around 8000 students studying with the University. The Open University offers courses in 12 subjects that include arts, computing, management and psychology. Another notable feature is that a low income family that has an annual income of 25,645 pounds or less may recieve assistance with course fees.
Leeds University is one of the largest universities in England and a major teaching and research institution in the United Kingdom. While it is ranked among the top ten UK universities it is also widely known as one of the six original civic universities in England. Civic universities in England are those universities who never took religion or ethnic background of the students into consideration during enrolment. This was the reason they were named 'red brick' universities. The university is located one mile north of Leeds city centre and is within walking distance of the city centre and the district of Headingley. You can enter by car through Woodhouse Lane near the Parkinson building, also known as the University Tower.
St James's is probably the most famous hospital in Leeds, popularly known as Jimmy's. It houses the clinical science building of Leeds University and an extensive library. St. James is Europe's largest teaching hospital. Presently the largest Oncology Department in Europe is being set up here.
The Leeds Bradford University Centre of Cricketing Excellence (commonly abbreviated as Leeds/Bradford UCCE) is part of the six University centres of Cricketing Excellence supported by the famous Marylebone Cricket Club or MCC in short. This sporting university is yet to achieve a first class status in the English cricket league, but already has had some notable achievements, such as beating Surrey county team in 2005.
Leeds university is very versatile academically. In addition to the traditional academic curriculum based university, it is also a medical and a sports university. Leeds University has come a long way since 1880 when the first institution, named Victoria University, was set up in Leeds. The Victoria University had a short life. The Leeds University came into existence in the year 1904 when a royal charter was granted in its favour by Edward VII. Since then the University has witnessed many evolutionary and revolutionary improvements. Its two unique features are the avenue it provides for its students to participate in extra-curricular activities and the attempts made to provide a safe studying environment for its students.

Harewood House Monday, December 6, 2010
Construction on Harewood House began in 1759. Not long after, the Lascelles family began accepting visitors who were interested in the unique architecture and the surrounding countryside. Today's visitors can still experience the sights and sounds of those days, while enjoying attractions that have been added in recent years. Below, you will find information to help you plan your trip.
What to See
Items of interests in the house include Chippendale furniture and a number of paintings by masters of the Italian Renaissance. Outside in the gardens, you can walk along the Terrace, designed by Sir Charles Barry in the 1840s.
The Bird Garden is home to 100 species, including penguins at some times of the year. In the Himalayan Garden, you will find a Buddhist Stupa, as well as beautiful flowering plants and trees.
There is more to the estate than Harewood House itself. You will want to tour the home, the gardens and the grounds. Time permitting, you may want to visit Plumpton Rocks, too, a nearby attraction that has been the subject of several paintings currently hanging in the house.
You and your children will enjoy the Adventure Playground, which is suitable for kids of all ages and large enough to accommodate school groups. All through the summer, you will find special outdoor events at Harewood House. There is truly something for everyone.
Getting There
From points within the UK, you can travel by foot, car, rail or coach to Yorkshire, where the estate is located. Hikers will be familiar with the Leeds Country Way footpath, which passes through the estate, just south of the house and lake.
The M1 Motorway provides the fastest access to Yorkshire for a motor vehicle. Hertz Rental Car operates in Yorkshire. Other options include Europcar, which is based at the York Station, and Greenmotion in Bradford.
Coaches are available from major cities like London, York and Leeds. Traveling by high speed rail is one of the most popular options. From the station, you can continue your journey by hire car, or take a bus to the Harewood House estate.
Where to Stay
You will find lodging in Yorkshire for every budget and preference. Whether you are interested in a luxury hotel or a campsite, you'll be pleased with all of the choices, unless you have trouble making decisions.
You can search online for nearby hotels, campsites, B&Bs, guest houses, and other lodging. You can refine your search to include your arrival date, the number of nights you will be staying, the number of people in your party and the type of accommodation you prefer. For a longer stay in the area, you could rent a Holiday Cottage, invite friends or family, and make an event of it!

The Causes and Treatment of Toothache (Odontalgia)
According to the British Dental Health Foundation "about 5 million people visit their dentist with toothache every year". Toothache is a common problem that can be prevented with good oral hygiene.
Toothache occurs because the pulp of the tooth is exposed, disturbed or infected. The pulp is the inner layer of the tooth which is engulfed in a layer of dentin and then by the hard layer that we see called the enamel, which is packed full of minerals. Toothache can also occur if just the outer enamel layer is damaged exposing only the dentin.
It is very important that you go to a dentist if you have toothache so that they can find a cause and apply appropriate treatment to ease your discomfort.
The most common dental causes of toothache are:
- Tooth Root Sensitivities - over-sensitivity when consuming hot or cold, sweet or sour food and beverages.
- Tooth Decay - also known as tooth 'cavities' or tooth 'caries'.
- Tooth Abscess - a complication of tooth decay.
- Gum Disease - also known as gingivitis and in severe cases periodontal disease.
- Jaw Disease - also known as TMJ (Temporo-Mandibular Joint) dysfunction.
- A Cracked Tooth.
Tooth Root Sensitivities occur when bacterial toxins get to work and dissolve the bone around the root of the tooth, the gum and bone recede exposing the root of the tooth causing the sensitivity and toothache. This is then likely to lead to chronic gum disease.
Treatment: Visit your dentist. Fluoride gel and sensitivity toothpastes that contain fluoride will both help the root to become stronger and in turn reduce the toothache. If the root sensitivity causes the inner pulp to die a root canal procedure or tooth extraction will need to be carried out to stop the toothache.
Tooth Decay occurs when the minerals of the enamel are dissolved by acid created by bacteria in our mouths (a build up of this bacteria is known as plaque). This demineralisation of the enamel forms a hole in the tooth exposing the dentin causing the toothache. If the toothache is severe then the hole has most likely exposed the inner pulp as well.
The obvious prevention for tooth decay is to eat as little sugar as possible because the acid that causes the enamel to decay is created by the bacteria eating the sugar and starch left in our mouths. So brush your teeth preferably after every meal or snack with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing will also help a lot. Being thorough with your brushing and flossing will stop any build of plaque forming.
Treatment: Your dentist will in most cases apply a filling to the tooth cavity, large cavities may need a crown. If the cavity damages the inner pulp then a root canal procedure or extraction of the tooth may be necessary to stop the toothache.
Tooth Abscesses occur when a dental cavity has been left untreated. The bacteria has infected the tooth from the inner pulp all the way up to the bone tissue at the end of the root causing severe toothache.
Treatment: Your dentist will have to carry out a root canal procedure where the pulp of the tooth is removed and then filled and sealed with an inert material. If this is unsuccessful then the tooth will have to be removed.
Gum Disease occurs when the soft tissue in our mouths becomes infected due to a build up of plaque or tartar along the gum line. It is highly likely that your toothache will be accompanied with bleeding gums if you have gum disease.
Treatment: In mild cases of gum disease your dentist will help you become more informed in order to improve your oral hygiene, they will also remove any build up of plaque. Root planning may need to be done which is the removal of plaque and tartar from the exposed roots. In more severe cases the surface of the inflamed gum tissue will have to be removed which is known as subgingival curettage. Oral antibiotics will also need to be taken alongside these procedures.
Jaw Disease usually occurs when there has been an impact or injury to the head such as whiplash. Bruxism (grinding of the teeth) often leads to TMJ as well as arthritis and having an over-bite. Jaw disease is often characterised by pain in the muscles around the jaw and limitations in jaw movement.
Treatment: Your dentist will fit a special intraoral splint for you to wear. If your bite needs to be fixed then crowns and orthodontic treatment are likely as well as medication to relieve the toothache.
Cracked Tooth can occur for many reasons such as an injury to the mouth, bruxism, chewing on hard objects or extreme changes in temperature on your teeth (such as eating hot food immediately followed by an iced drink) can all cause a tooth to crack and expose the dentin or inner pulp. The toothache may occur when the crack closes after releasing the pressure of a bite. The toothache gets worse over time if left untreated as the inner pulp can become infected.
If you have visible a crack in your teeth that is not accompanied by toothache then it is known as a 'craze' line and is considered to be part of the natural anatomy of the tooth, they usually occur as we age.
Treatment: Your dentist will evaluate the treatment needed depending on the severity of the crack. This can involve bonding for a small crack or a root canal treatment for a large crack where the inner pulp of the tooth has been damaged. In severe cases the tooth may need to be removed to stop the toothache.
In very rare cases toothache can also be caused by the following:
- Angina - a disease of the throat marked by spasmodic attacks of intense suffocating pain
- Heart Disease.
- Myocardial Infarction - destruction of heart tissue resulting from obstruction of the blood supply to the heart muscle.
Whatever the cause of your toothache it is important you see a dentist so that they can determine the cause and apply the appropriate treatment or refer you to a doctor. If you have to wait for your appointment then to soothe the pain you can apply a cold compress to the area of the cheek where the toothache is. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water and taking aspirin will also help. A good oral hygiene routine will prevent any toothache occurring.

Great Fundraising Ideas Sunday, November 14, 2010
There's nothing better than knowing that you've also played a part in making the world a better place. With the dwindling economy, more and more people need help. Life has certainly gotten more difficult. The cost of living has increased but salaries remain the same. Aside from that, the number of homeless people has increased. Many have tried everything to make money, but it seems as if Lady Luck wasn't with them on their journey. So what do you do? Do you just turn a deaf ear and move on with your life? You can do that, but you definitely won't feel any better for it. If you have the means, why not share your blessings with the rest of the world? This doesn't call for martyrdom in any way. When it comes to charity, any amount, no matter how little it is, will always be appreciated. And as important as your monetary contributions are, time is also just as valued.
Here are some amazing fundraising ideas you may want to use:
1. The pay-it-forward theme. It's simply asking people to show the same charitable act to the others around them. Move on to inspire others and see just how far you can go.
2. Look into online fundraising. Trend usually is geared toward one organization buying cheap, second-hand products and selling them to those who need it. All the profits go to a certain organization. Go for a newspaper drive or start collecting old pieces of equipment. You'll be surprised at the number of people who want this. Or, you can raise money when you simply ask people to click a button. This gives others a chance to help while doing what they like most. A good example would be purchasing clothes online.
3. Organize a bake sale. This would be like hitting two birds with one stone. If you're good in the kitchen, not only are you helping, but you're actually marketing your products to possible customers.
4. Discount cards and prize coupons might be perfect if you're targeting the younger market. This might be a little too popular. Nonetheless, if you target great establishments, you'll have the support of a lot of people.
5. Bring together a group of people for a car wash event. This is just as popular as a bake sale or a festival. Nonetheless, it does bring a sense of community among the participants. This is also doing work without making it feel like such a chore because get-togethers such as this one are usually fun.
6. Silent auctions are known to be helpful because you can have practically anything auctioned off: old books, classic clothing, paintings, and jewelry. Name it and it has been sold.
7. You can get the help of your town girl scouts to sell goods door-to-door. With this, you can make use of your vast network of friends and acquaintances to help you.
These are just some of the things you can try. The work entailed when organizing these events can be taxing, but the satisfaction you'll get at the end far outweighs everything else.
Denise is an active member of a company that offers fundraising ideas and better ways to recycle. Phoneraiser is a fund raising company that collects old cellphones, used ink cartridges, and PDAs. In return, you get cash while saving the environment.

Choosing Toys For Boys Tuesday, November 2, 2010
Shopping can be a lot of fun, especially if you know the recipient well, allowing you to know exactly what they want and what you're going to buy for them as a gift. However, have you ever had to shop for someone that you don't know very well? If you have, you know how frustrating this can be, particularly when the recipient is a child.
With the huge selection of toys available today, you'd think it would be very easy to shop for children. Go the girl's section, pick out the most popular item, and do the same with any boys on your shopping list. Sounds easy enough, right? It may sound simple and easy, but with so many toys available today, children tend to be fussier or more specific about what they want than ever. And, boys seem to be more specific than girls are. If you're spending money on a child's gift, you want to know that you're getting them something they'll enjoy. Here are some tips of choosing toys for boys.
Every year toy manufacturers come up with newer, bigger and better toys than the year before. These toys may not always be better in quality, but they're better in the eyes of the little boys. If you're looking for a good selection of toys for boys, here's a list of some of the most popular this year.
Transformers Helmet is a great selection for that Transformers fan in your life. Everything even remotely connected to the Transformers movie is popular with young children, particularly boys but the helmet is a huge hit this years. This helmet will allow your little boy to dress up just the BUMBLEBEE character in the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie, while it will remix their voice just like the voice of BUMBLEBEE. It also plays realistic sounds from the movie. Little boys love this helmet! It's also adjustable so it fits on almost everyone with minimal adjustments.
LEGO's continue to be popular year after year. Each year the manufacturer of this forever-popular toy seems to come up with new creations that can be made with their Lego's. While their small size makes them inappropriate for young boys under the age of three, Lego's are one of the most popular toys for boys from age 3 right up until adulthood (even adults enjoy building Lego creations). The newest Lego toys are Star War creations, which continue to thrill boys of all ages.
Another popular LEGO toy for boys is the Mindstorms NXT. This is appropriate for boys 11 years and older. Boys will be able to build robots that can talk, walk, hear, see and touch. They can even program it to receive commands from your mobile phone. The LEGO Mindstorms NXT is technology at its finest!
Video games have been popular toys for boys (and girls) for many years and seem to be more popular than ever. The Xbox 360 is at the top of the list for video games. While the Xbox 360 may be a little more than you'd like to spend, it makes a great choice if you have a couple of boys, making it the perfect "family gift". It's a lasting gift that will provide hours of enjoyment for all family members and offers a wide selection of games.
As I stated above, Transformers toys and games are a huge hit with boys. One of the latest Transformers gift ideas is the Construction Devastator. You'll actually be giving them 6 toys in one. They'll love combining the Mixmaster, Longhaul, Rampage, Scavenger, Scrapper and Hightower to build the might Construction Devastator. It comes complete with motion-activated sounds, electronic speech and sounds of destruction. Scenes from the movie can be recreated right in your living room.

Are You Thinking About Visiting Warminster, Wiltshire? Saturday, October 23, 2010
Life in the city can become too much to handle, which is why it is necessary to get away from time to time. A popular place for people to escape to is the British countryside. When people think about the countryside, they think of quiet locations, clean air, and beautiful landscapes, such as those found in Warminster - Wiltshire.
Warminster is located to the south west of Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire. It is considered to be a market town, which means it is home to many open markets. You can find many interesting things at these markets, such as specialty foods, one of a kind trinkets, and unique items.
Warminster is also a great place stop by if you are on the way to other sites, like Stonehenge, Bath, and Bradford-on-Avon.
There are many beautiful places where you can spend your time in Warminster. For example, there is a boating lake and a park that is both quiet and clean. There is also a golf course and tennis courts that are open to the public.
There are also great trails to travel down. These are great for people who love to hike, bike, go horse riding, or do bird watching.
If you enjoy history, there is a local history museum called the Dewey Museum. It also houses geological attractions and occasionally has special events for the public. It also hosts guest speakers.
The Athenaeum is a popular entertainment center on the high street. It contains an art gallery, theatre, coffee lounge, and cinema. It also hosts live entertainment from all over the world.
If you enjoy the countryside, sports, and experiencing history, Warminster - Wiltshire may be the perfect location for your next holiday. Only in Warminster are you able to appreciate vast landscapes, visit museums and galleries, watch live shows, learn about geology, and go UFO spotting.
For accommodation in Warminster check this list of Warminster hotels.

Saint Martin's University - A Catholic Treasure Hidden in the Pacific NW Saturday, October 16, 2010
Hidden among the evergreens in the great Pacific Northwest is Saint Martin's College, a Benedictine university in the Catholic tradition. As a resident of Lacey, Washington (the state, not DC) I drive by this hidden treasure daily.
Saint Martin's University is an independent four-year, Catholic, coeducational university located on a beautiful 320-acre wooded campus, and has proven to be a magnet for students of wealthy families from Asian countries and associated families and countries around the world.
Established in 1895 by the Catholic Order of Saint Benedict, the University is one of 18 Benedictine colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, and the only one west of the Rocky Mountains.
It is amazing how many great universities there are in this country that remain relatively unknown because of their size and population. Perhaps even less known are the staff members who teach the students.
I was reminded of this the other day upon learning that Tapas Das, an adjunct faculty member of Saint Martin's University School of Engineering, has been named the recipient of the Development Organization for Sustainable Transformation (DOST) Professor S. K. Sharma Medal and CHEMCON Distinguished Speaker Award for 2007.
The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers recently conferred the award upon Das to recognize his contributions to the profession of chemical engineering worldwide.
Das received the award last month at the Chemical Engineering Congress (CHEMCON 2007) in Calcutta (now known as Kolkata), India, where he delivered the lecture, "Environmental Sustainability: Key Roles of Chemical Engineers" to an international audience of the world's leading chemical engineers.
Tapas Das is a doctor of philosophy and professional engineer. He earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Bradford University in England and a B.S. in chemical engineering from Jadavpur University in Kolkata.
He has conducted postdoctoral research at the Chemical Engineering Department of Imperial College in London, and the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department of Princeton University.
With an expertise in environmental sustainability, Das has managed engineering projects examining air quality, water quality, water reuse, solid waste management, life-cycle assessment and sustainable development.
Saint Martin's University prepares students for successful lives through its 21 majors and 6 graduate programs spanning the liberal arts, business, education and engineering.
Saint Martin's welcomes 1,250 students from many ethnic and religious backgrounds to its main campus, and 650 more to its 5 extension campuses located at Fort Lewis Army Post, McChord Air Force Base, Olympic College, Centralia College and Tacoma Community College, all located in the State of Washington.
Additional information on Saint Martin's College is available through Jennifer Fellinger at (360) 438-4332 if you are calling within the United States.

Flights to Lanzarote - Increasing Choice For Travellers Wednesday, October 6, 2010
Travelling to Lanzarote has never been easier. At least 9 airlines now operate an estimated 40 flights a week from 15 local airports in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
From London, there is a choice of Gatwick, Stansted, or Luton. Southern regional airports flying to the island include Exeter and Bristol. From Wales, you can also travel weekly from Cardiff; alternatively, cross the border to Bristol from South Wales or to Manchester from North Wales.
There are a large number of flights from Manchester with new airline Jet2 being one of the busiest, who also fly from Newcastle and Glasgow. Completing the regional picture, you can also get flights from Leeds Bradford or Birmingham airports.
This choice also means some pretty tasty fares. Despite the fact that Lanzarote is 4 hours from London by plane, which accounts for its year round sunshine and sizzling temperatures, flights can be bought from as little as £120 return including taxes and charges. True, this is pricier than Malaga, Alicante or Faro, but then it is twice as far, and it is warmer in Lanzarote than Mainland Spain and Portugal, especially in the winter months.
With flights to Lanzarote so cheap, and with more availability than ever before, it is not surprising that many UK and Irish people are choosing to buy villas on Lanzarote and to move there permanently. The climate is especially good for anyone with arthritis or other mobility problems, because in addition to the added warmth, Lanzarote enjoys a drier and less humid climate than in Northern Europe. These points make the island very popular for people over 55, who often elect to spend the English Winter on the island, or even live there the whole year round.
The low cost and great availability of flights to Lanzarote from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Scotland, Wales and Ireland means that it is easy for family and friends to visit people who have taken to living on the island permanently or semi-permanently. At 4-5 hours, depending on where you fly from, the journey time is not that much greater than a North-South drive on the UK's motorways - and its inevitably warmer when you get there!
You can get full details of flights to Lanzarote by visiting the All Things Lanzarote website, which is also packed with ideas of places to go and things to do on the island, as well as holiday accommodation and car hire.
Miles Couchman is Editor and Owner of All Things Lanzarote (http://allthingslanzarote.com), a comprehensive travel information site about the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. In addition to flights to Lanzarote, the site includes information about villas in Lanzarote, apartment and hotel accommodation, car hire suppliers, and places to go and things to do on Lanzarote.

10 Top Valentine Days Films For The Romantic Couch Potato
"Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it. Let's do it, let's fall in love!" -- Cole Porter
Hollywood does it better Yes, there is something about the formulaic Rom Com plot line that draws us in and makes us wish our lives were as predictable as a Meg Ryan (in her better days) film. Yet with so many variations of basically the same ending, which journey down the path of 'happily ever after' is the best?
1. Love Actually
Hardly a surprise really. Great story, great cast. Has the power to restore your faith in love, actually (sorry, couldn't help it).
2. 10 Things I Hate About You
How do I loathe thee? Let me count the ways...
This modern day teen movie spin of a Shakespeare's 'Taming of the Shrew' is a 10 out of 10 for cast, (who, male or female, can resist Heath Ledger in leather boots?), plot, and Shakespearian references. See below for Kat's (Julia Stiles) own version of a Shakespearean sonnet in iambic pentameter:
- I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair.
- I hate the way you drive my car.
- I hate it when you stare.
- I hate your big dumb combat boots, and the way you read my mind.
- I hate you so much it makes me sick; it even makes me rhyme.
- I hate the way you're always right.
- I hate it when you lie.
- I hate it when you make me laugh, even worse when you make me cry.
- I hate it when you're not around, and the fact that you didn't call.
- But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.
3. When Harry Met Sally
Love comes in many shapes and forms, but in the case of Harry and Sally, we learn that pear shaped encounters can indeed transform into friendship, & even eventually into romantic love. Clever dialogue, brilliant characters, and relevant questions of love and friendship make this film the much loved classic it still is.
Realist or cynical? Here's Harry Burns' take on relationships: Harry: Right now everything is great, everyone is happy, everyone is in love and that's wonderful. But you gotta know that sooner or later you're gonna be screaming at each other about who's gonna get this dish. This eight dollar dish will cost you a thousand dollars in phone calls to the legal firm of That's Mine, This Is Yours. Marie: Harry. Harry: Please, Jess, Marie. Do me a favor, for your own good, put your name in your books right now before they get mixed up and you won't know whose is whose. Because someday, believe it or not, you'll go 15 rounds over who's gonna get this coffee table. This stupid, wagon wheel, Roy Rogers, garage sale coffee table. Jess: I thought you liked it? Harry: I was being nice!
4. High Fidelity
Rob's (John Cusack) current girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle) has left him for Ian (a pony-tailed Tim Robbins), their spiritual neighbour who specializes in conflict resolution. Rob wallows in self-pity and insecurity and analyses the top five major breakups of his life to glean some pattern on why his relationships are doomed to end in failure.
Why we love it:
We can relate to it: Simply put, Rob is an insecure self-centered jerk who, because of his insecurity, ends up hurting those around him.
From cult pop favourite from bands like The Velvet Underground to mainstream bands like Green Day, there is plenty to keep the music enthusiasts in check and thoroughly satisfied.
The acting is superb: Cusack is incredibly charismatic and pulls off the first-person narrative without being boring. Jack Black and Todd Louiso provide a lot of comic relief when it's needed.
And finally, it's probably one of the few romantic comedies a man will actually enjoy watching with you.
5. Punch Drunk Love
Could it really be possible: Adam Sandler in an art film? The movie ends up being genuinely romantic while deviating completely from the very stale paradigm for romantic comedies of the last decade. An absolute must see.
6. My Sassy Girl
A sweet Midwestern guy (Bradford) with his life planned out for himself is wooed, groomed, and ultimately dumped by a complicated, elusive girl (Cuthbert). My Sassy Girl is a South Korean, successful to the proportions of Titanic across Asia. It is partially based on the true story told in a series of love letters written by Kim Ho-sik, a man who posted them online.
Like the best Korean films, "My Sassy Girl" is a genre-bending exercise that throws in elements of the teen comedy, the traditional melodramatic romance, and even some genre parody and mixes them into a unique cinematic experience that defies categorization. The film's original Korean title, Yeopgi, which means 'novelty-seeking', is in reference to the youth craze that was started by Kim Ho-sik's original Internet postings about his eccentric girlfriend. Though the English title for this film doesn't mean quite the same thing, it certainly does tell you what to expect.
7. Some Like It Hot
For those who haven't seen it, "Some Like It Hot" (1959) is one of the greatest comedies ever! In a story of increasingly wild absurdity, it follows the antics of two idiot musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) who, after witnessing the St Valentine's Day Massacre, struggle to escape the gangsters (including a severely unsmiling George Raft) by dressing up in drag and joining an all-girl band. Comic complications aplenty ensue when Tony Curtis - now a pouting girlie - strives to express his lust for Marilyn, while Jack Lemmon - equally high-voiced and simpering - is being pursued by an amorous Joe E Brown, who has one of the funniest - and most radical - final punch-lines in screen comedy.
8. Pretty Woman
Even prostitutes do it...
If you think about it, this film is about as far removed from reality as a glossy Vogue magazine. And judging by the films success, that's exactly what we want to see. Any dark hues of harsh reality were bleached out, synthesized and made sleek, much like Vivian's blonde wig in the beginning of the film. The illusion is flimsy, but we just don't care. We want to see the transformation, at whatever cost (pardon the pun). At one point, Julia Robert's character Vivian, speaks for Disney (and audiences) when she tells Edward: "I want the fairy tale." So do we Julia, so do we...
9. The Wedding Singer
A sentimental and sweet crowd-pleaser that captures the magic and warmth of falling in love. Though it may be predictable and retreads some familiar territory, there are enough hooks in the story to make it something we can't help but laugh at. And although there is absolutely no reason for the film to be set in the 1980's, why not squeeze in a few more cheap laughs (if only to distract us from the relatively boring plotline) with some Culture Club and mullets?
10. 50 First Dates
"Imagine having to win over the girl of your dreams... every friggin' day".
Okay, so "50 First Dates" is mostly silly, but they do a good job with it. Honolulu veterinarian Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) falls for Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore), only to find out that, due to an accident, her memory only lasts one day, so she won't remember him the next day! How will Henry cope with this? The movie gravitates between goofy and sensitive, but never gets mind-numbing; Adam Sandler always has something up his sleeve, and he and Barrymore have a great time with the material. As is often the case in Adam Sandler's movies, one of the characters is an embarrassment to everyone else (in this case, it's Rob Schneider as Henry's whacked-out friend Ula). Great fun.
Perhaps the only thing left to be said here is the surprising popularity of Adam Sandler, appearing three times in the top 10 list with 'Punch Drunk Love', 'The Wedding Singer' and '50 First Dates'. Have fun with these Romantic Comedies on Valentines Day.

Safety First On Halloween Night
How many times have you seen on your local news, stories about children being hit by a car on Halloween night because they dashed out into the street without thinking or ran out between parked cars? It breaks my heart when I hear something like that. For a child Halloween is such an exciting and fun night that sometimes they forget all the safety rules you've ever taught them. They are so excited to get to the next house that they shoot across the street without even thinking of looking both ways. I've seen it many times in my neighborhood (thankfully no cars were coming); especially when kids are following each other and one falls behind. They dart across the street just trying to catch up with their friends.
On a normal day, most parents know what safety precautions to take when it comes to their child's safety, but do you know the extra lengths we should go to on Halloween night? It is our responsibility to make sure the children are safe. Even the littlest precautions can mean a lot.
- If you're driving, you have to be aware of the children. Drive SLOWLY! Watch for children to run out between cars or in the middle of the street. This is so important to stress if you have a teenage driver. When backing down your driveway be careful to make sure it is clear. Do not pass stopped cars, they may be unloading children.
- Have your child wear clothing with reflective markings or tape. There are also glow sticks, pumpkin flashlights and other similar items that you can buy to have your child wear around their neck or pin to their costume so that they are clearly visible to motorists after dark.
- Accompany your child around the neighborhood. If you can't, make sure another adult is with them to supervise. As a parent you know if your child is "old" enough to go around the neighborhood with their friends without you, however it helps to have them wear a watch so they know when the trick-or-treat hours are over and when to head home. Always know exactly where they will be and what route they're taking.
- When picking out a costume, look for one made of flame-retardant material. Avoid loose-fitting costumes or billowing material which could accidentally come into contact with a flame. Make sure they have on comfortable shoes that fit.
- Check your child's costume and make sure it's not dragging the ground where they could trip and hurt themselves. Face paint is always a good substitution for a mask, however if they do have to wear one make sure they have nose and mouth openings and large enough eye holes so as not to block their line of vision.
- Make sure they know to only go to houses that are well lit and ones that they know someone is home. They should never enter a stranger's home.
- Have them bring their candy home first before eating anything. Go through it with them and throw out anything you're not sure about. Have them eat dinner before they go out trick-or-treating. That way they're not as hungry and won't fill up on too much candy.
On Halloween night it's tradition in my family to order pizza and have it delivered. It's such a hectic night with trying to get everyone situated into their costume that it's easier than fixing a big dinner - plus the kids love it. But remember to order early because apparently it's not just a tradition in our household. Pizza has become the new "Halloween night dinner" and is among the top five nights of the year for home deliveries along with - the day before Thanksgiving, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and Super Bowl Sunday.
All parents want their children to be safe. Just use common sense on Halloween night. It's really important especially for younger children, that you go out with them so that you can be their eyes and ears. To them safety is not their top priority - so it has to be yours!

10 Tips For Booking Family Package Holidays Tuesday, September 28, 2010
If you're thinking about going away this year and are contemplating on of the many family package holidays available, then you'll want to make sure that you're getting the best deal, and going to the right destination for you and your family.
Here's what you need to think about.
1. You'll want to establish when you'll go on holiday. Will you choose the summer holiday when the children are off school, or will you choose earlier or later in the year when the prices aren't as high, and the availability might be better?
2. You might be limited as to how long your holiday can be. Can you only take a certain amount of time off work? Do you have other commitments that mean you can't be away too long? There's no point in looking at going halfway round the world for a week's holiday.
3. Perhaps you'll want to establish why you're going on holiday. It might be to relax by the sea for a couple of weeks, or to go site seeing.
4. It's important that you establish where you're going on holiday. You'll want to get all the family involved in this, so that they all have a say in where they go on holiday. You might want to consider that visiting certain places might be beneficial for you children's school work, such as history or so that they can practice their language skills.
5. Perhaps not all family members want to go with you, or there may be a compromise involved. Younger children are likely to be very exhibited about going on holiday, whereas teenagers might not like the idea of going on holiday with mum and dad again.
6. You and the rest of your family will also want to see what there is to do at your destination. You might want a pool or a beach, or more exciting or adventurous activities.
7. Perhaps you'll choose somewhere that offers the best of both worlds, so that those who want to relax can do, and those who want to explore more of their holiday destination will find plenty to see and do.
8. When it comes to booking family package holidays, you'll be faced with the choice of booking online or at a travel agent. Depending on your needs, and how complicated your requirements are, you might be better off booking online and saving time and money. Alternatively, you might want to seek the expertise of an established travel agent if you have any questions.
9. The cost of your holiday is important, although you'll want to make sure that you and the rest of your family have a good time, and enjoy the change of scenery, rather than thinking about holidaying on a budget.
10. When thinking about your holiday budget, you might also need to factor in family holiday travel insurance, a hire car, airport parking, or taxis to and from the airport.
Now you know more about how to choose and book your holiday, the only hard decision is to choose which of the many family package holidays is right for you.

Business And The Recession - How Full (Or Empty) Is Your Glass? Monday, September 27, 2010
....It's getting worse!
Recession has been the spectre looming over us all since 2008 and it's getting worse again.
But what is a recession? The technical definition of a recession is a decline in GDP (gross domestic product) for two or more consecutive quarters. By that measure, Southern Ireland is now officially in a recession and the UK is nervously looking over the precipice. We're not there yet, but it could be coming.
But the problem is that psychologically, we are already in meltdown mode and everyone's new favourite phrase is "credit crunch." In 2008, our eyes and ears were continuously assaulted with overwhelming evidence of doom;
-
UK retail sales dropped to a 25-year low in July,
-
US investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed after 160 years in operation,
-
AIG, the world's largest insurer, was nationalized by the US government to prevent its failure,
-
Bradford and Bingley, the UK's biggest buy-to-let mortgage lender, was nationalized,
-
Mortgage lending and house sales were at the lowest levels for years,
-
In October 2008, the UK stock market had its biggest falls for 21 years...
It's too easy to listen to the doom and gloom every day and sink into a sea of negativity, but let's look at this thing from another angle; we are going through difficulties, which are likely to get worse, but we know that at some time in the future, in the words of the song, "Things can only get better."
So the key, both personally and if you own a business, is to think long-term - and think positively! Stuff happens - it's how you react that's important. For business owners, mindset is key to success, so here's a thought to consider...
RECESSION IS GOOD!
It sounds a little brutal, especially if your business is struggling, or you have recently lost your job and are struggling to pay bills. But it's true! Over the long-term, recession is good for an economy, cooling down overheated market sectors and removing weaker operators. For an individual business, recession can be good because;
-
It eliminates laziness - businesses and their employees have to work harder to survive in difficult times.
-
It removes complacency - it's often too easy to make money during the good times. In hard times, businesses need to be smarter and more focused in order to succeed. A client who runs a small carpet retail outlet recently told me that, although his sales were not increasing, his profits had improved because the difficult trading conditions had forced him to run the business more efficiently.
-
It creates opportunities - weaker competitors will fail, certain types of business will thrive (discount supermarkets, pawnbrokers and gold traders are currently seeing record levels of business) and changing times and customer needs will create potential market opportunities for new businesses to be launched.
-
Act quickly. Look for ways to reduce costs and inefficiency, without compromising the business.
-
Reduce debt levels, avoid taking on other debts and reduce the cost of existing debt.
-
Get closer to your customers. Find out what they really want from you.
-
Get closer to competitors. Copy their successes, avoid their errors and pick up their business if they fail.
-
Diversify - look for opportunities created by the changing economic environment.
-
Keep marketing and selling. If you are not making enough revenue, sell more.
-
Keep working on your business and looking for ways to improve it.
-
Get help. Organisations such as Business Link are there to help - use them.

Bradford & Bingley - How to Bungle a Share Issue Wednesday, September 22, 2010
The problems besetting Bradford and Bingley started on 14 April 2008 when it denied reports that it intended to raise funds through a rights issue of new shares and sought to reassure depositors, shareholders and the market that it had a strong capital and liquidity base.
On 22 April, Mr Stephen Crawshaw, the Chief Executive, stated that he saw 'excellent growth' during the first quarter of 2008 and that the bank was well funded.
However, on 14 May, B&B announced a rights issue, priced at 82 pence a share in an effort to raise GBP300 million from shareholders. Mr Crawshaw apologised.
This attempt to mislead the markets had backfired, and the share price, which stood at around 185 pence at the end of April, went into free-fall.
On 2 June, B&B issued a profits warning. Mr Crawshaw resigned and was replaced by Mr Rod Kent. At the same time, B&B announced that it planned to sell a 23% stake in the bank to TPG for GBP179 million, by way of new shares. TPG, formerly Texas Pacific Capital, is a global financial institution. A further GBP258 million was to be raised via a revised rights issue at 55p per share. The rights issue was to be underwritten by Citigroup and UBS.
On 23 June, an alternative offer was made to B&B by Mr Clive Cowdery, who represented four of B&B's largest shareholders - Legal & General, M&G Investment Mangers, Standard Life, and Insight Investment. Mr Cowdery was offering to buy stock at 72 per share. The talks stalled due to B&B's refusal to open its books to Mr Cowdery. At the time, B&B took the view that the proposal by TPG was more attractive and described Mr Cowdery's bid as 'uncertain' and criticised it for ceding too much control to his Resolution investment group.
On 3 July, TPG stated that it intended to withdraw from the deal due to Moody's reducing the credit rating of B&B from A3 to Baa1. The credit rating agency cited B&B's obligation to buy mortgages of up to GBP350 million per quarter from GMAC, a global finance company, until 2009.
The general reaction to this news was one of hysteria and an avalanche of criticism from UK institutions. However, B&B admitted that TPG did have an option to withdraw, should there be a downgrading of its credit rating. Therefore, TPG was not only well within its right to withdraw, but probably correctly concluded that B&B had severe problems of which they had not been previously aware.
The quality of this dubious GMAC portfolio continues to attract severe criticism from shareholders. Moody's also expressed reservations about B&B's buy-to-let mortgages and self certification loans, although these were overshadowed by the GMAC commitment. Several independent commentators have suggested that B&B could lose in excess of GBP400 million, due to write downs, in a final reckoning of its unwise commitment to GMAC.
In addition, the bank remains tied into deals with Aire Valley Master Trust, who have some GBP13 billion of mortgage assets. B&B has GBP11 billion of mortgages in its Aire Valley securitisation programme, which is triple A-rated.
However, Moody's downgrade of B&B's own credit rating means the bank does not enjoy the sufficiently high rating required under the interest rate swap that it provides to the Aire Valley trust.
B&B has to address this matter within 1 month. There are three possibilities - firstly, it could inject an undisclosed amount of extra cash, secondly, it could nominate an intermediary as a counter party, or thirdly, it could find a guarantor.
On 4 July B&B claimed that it had a renewed commitment from the four major institutions who were originally part of the Clive Cowdery offer. This would enable the GBP400 million rights offer to proceed at 55 pence a share.
Behind the scenes, the Financial Services Authority (FSA) was working hard to ensure that B&B did not collapse, as had Northern Rock.
The FSA rescue on Thursday 3 July made an undisclosed facility available to B&B. It has been described as a classic bank of England lifeboat operation. The lifeboat refers to the activities of the Bank of England in lending funds to small financial institutions in the 1970s.
At the same time, the Bank of England has exerted influence, some would say pressure, on some of the largest British banks in an effort to ensure that the underwriting of the rights issue by Citigroup and UBS goes ahead.
At the current market price, which is considerably less than 55p, the underwriters will end up purchasing all the new shares. However, due to the Bank of England's efforts, these losses will now be shared with HBOS, Lloyds TSB, Barclays, Abbey, RBS and HSBC. This will amount to purchasing some GBP230 million or a 33% share in B&B.
Meanwhile B&B has disclosed that the chaotic rights issue of GBP400 million will now cost GBP54 million. This is because the prospectus is now in its third version. Worse still, Goldman Sachs will receive a fee for introducing TPG to B&B. This is despite the fact that no deal was done and TPG walked away.
It now looks that B&B is safe, for the moment, from bankruptcy or being taken into public ownership. However, the rights issue will place the other leading UK banks into a loss making situation. The disaster at B&B was precipitated by a lack of honesty in the statements of the Chief Executive. Once his attempts to mislead the markets were publicised, the share price went into free fall.
Duplicity, or lying, by chief executives of banks is a most dangerous and unwelcome development. Banks operate on the basis of trust, namely depositors entrust them with their life's savings. Bank managers have traditionally advised borrowers to be cautious and ensure they can meet their commitments. This is now exposed as a sham. B&B issued self certification mortgages to anyone who could fill out an application form, and engaged in ill considered deals with global giants such as GMAC.
The embarrassment of announcing a rights issue of new shares was unfortunate, but the fact that the prospectus had to be revised on two successive occasions demonstrates incompetence and ineptitude.
The only player who has emerged from this saga with an untarnished reputation is the Bank of England. In the aftermath of their disastrous handling of Northern Rock, they have regained some credibility.
This has not been achieved by the granting of any new powers to the Bank of England. On the contrary, they have reverted to their traditional and historic role as a lender of last resort. Bankers who were in trouble would arrive in Threadneedle Street at 3pm and drink tea with the Governor. After talking about, Ascot, Wimbledon, Eton or whatever, the banker would indicate that his bank was insolvent and would be forced to declare bankruptcy on the next day. At this point, the Governor would offer a loan, and the matter would be concluded with a handshake.
It is gratifying to see that the Bank of England understands its role in turbulent times.

A Gift For Mother Thursday, September 16, 2010
In the south, Spring is beginning to show up in beautiful blossoming trees and flowers. That means Mother's Day almost here, and it falls on Sunday, May 9, 2010. If your mother loves collectible figurines, then shopping is easy as you can simply add to her collection.
Suppose, however, that you're totally out of ideas, and your mother just doesn't seem the collectible figurines "type"? Maybe you should reconsider - or maybe you just have no idea of the amazing variety of available figurines. From cute to elegant, from whimsical to moving, there really is something for every taste and every personality. Here are some thoughts and ideas to help get you started finding a gift for Mother.
First, you need only think of what your mother enjoys. Is she a sports fan, nature lover, military mom, nostalgia queen? You name it! You're probably aware of figurines such as angels, cats, dogs, fairies, birds and other wildlife. Did you know that you can also find collections such as football, fishing, motorcycles, Gone With the Wind, lighthouses, patriotic, Disney, dragons, Native American, Betty Boop, John Deere, John Wayne, and Elvis?
For a gift that gives back, several lines offer figurines for which a portion of the sales proceeds goes to charity. Give your mother a sleek pink motorcycle figurine, and you'll be contributing to breast cancer foundations. Thomas Kinkade offers a collection called "Commitment to Caring" that supports Alzheimer's research. These days I don't know anyone who hasn't somehow been touched by one of those dread diseases. What a wonderful way to give to mother and humankind at the same time.
If your search is for the more traditional figurines styles, you may want to look at lines such as Precious Moments, Lladro, Nao, and Goebel Hummel. For emotion and sentiment, Willow Tree Figurines are very expressive. More whimsical yet still touching styles can be found in collections such as Boyds Bears. Stepping completely out of the box, check out The Bradford Exchange for that cool pink motorcycle and lots of other unique figurines that just might suit your mother perfectly.
Of course, only you will know what's exactly right for your mother, and for the message you want to send. Our mothers are all so very unique with such different interests and personalities. Even so, whether you want to touch your mother's heart or make her laugh, you can find the perfect gift for your mother in the world of collectible figurines.
Happy Mother's Day!

Don Bradford made Kalamazoo Gibson Guitars Sunday, September 12, 2010
Bradford worked at Gibson until 1982, doing a number of jobs, including filing frets and final adjusting. He was one of several employees who could play guitar, and play well. One of his favorite parts of the job was the impromptu jamming at the end of the day. Since several employees played, they'd pick up an instrument and a group jam session would break out. "We were like a happy family," Bradford said. Bradford plays Chet Atkins "Windy and Warm" Video by Mark Bugnaski / Kalamazoo Gazette Mlive

Collagen and Health
Six years ago the captain of the British modern pentathlon team, James Greenwell, suffered a tendon injury to his ankle just at the peak of his career. Experts told James that it would take three months to repair the damage, so effectively ending his career. He felt there had to be an alternative so began research to find a faster acting treatment.
James ended up at the door of Professor Greg Whyte, Professor of Applied Sport and Exercise Science at John Moore's University, Liverpool. Professor Whyte had been researching the use of collagen hydrolysate so suggested James went on a treatment of fifteen tablets a day. The injury improved so markedly that after an amazing 22 days, James resumed training. His experience means that other Olympic athletes use collagen tablets to treat similar injuries.
Collagen makes up about 76% of the skin, muscles and connective tissues in the body so is the most common structural protein we have in our bodies. Problems arise with age: at the age of twenty-five the human body starts to lose collagen at an annual rate of 1.5%. By the age of forty-five 30% has been lost.
Such a loss of collagen shows itself in a loss of peak physical performance (it is more noticeable the more vigorous the activity) and the ageing of the skin. Clearly lessened support for joints results from a reduction of collagen in ligaments, tendons, muscles, cartilage and connective tissues and explains such conditions as muscular skeletal injuries and arthritis. A reduction can also affect the immune system. The body therefore benefits from good collagen health.
Several studies back these theories. Recently a study jointly undertaken by the University of Munich and Stamford University examined two thousand sufferers (both male and female) of osteoarthritis in the knee and hip joints. 75% of those studied who used a collagen supplement reported increased mobility and a reduction of pain.
A study of four hundred American, German and British patients experiencing arthritic knees was made by Cape Western University. Some patients received collagen and the rest a placebo. Of those treated with collagen, 93% showed positive results, some after just two weeks. There was a general reduction in pain and an improvement in mobility. Similarly a project at Harvard Medical School showed 90% of those treated in this way had an improvement in mobility.
Supplementing the body's collagen has taken several forms including creams and injections but probably the most efficient method of delivering the protein is in capsule form.
James Greenwell teamed up with Professor Greg Whyte on his retirement from athletics and marketed a collagen health supplement capsule. Together they created a company, Party On, and a brand, Proto-col, and distributes the capsules from their head office in Bradford-Upon-Avon in Wiltshire along with a range of other health and beauty products.
Perhaps it's not surprising the beauty industry and celebrities are taking a great interest in their collagen health.
Keith Braithwaite has had twenty years in and keenly observing direct selling. He is an accredited Proto-col affiliate. Other passions include personal development, painting, drawing, photography cycling, walking and the outdoors generally.

How to Choose Good Books Wednesday, September 8, 2010
Good books show their standing through high sales figures and high search figures on the internet. The 5 most popular categories based on these criteria (in descending order of importance) are Children's books, Management books, Fiction books, Books on Business and, Sales books.
Children's books are a popular choice as gifts. They are valuable as they help develop the child's reasoning and imaginative abilities and expand his/her vocabulary. They also aid in instilling sound moral values.
But choosing the right book for a specific child can be a challenge and the following guidelines should help.
Children can be grouped into categories according to their approximate age and a useful grouping is that of preschool, junior school, high school and young adults. This broad grouping should allow the preliminary elimination of certain books.
Next, any book with sensitive content can be eliminated. This would include all books which would not be in line with the family's values e.g. those which promote a specific religious point of view and those which require maturity to handle such as gratuitous violence and sexuality.
The gender of the child will further eliminate additional types of books.
Management books relate to the effective and efficient activities involved in the operation of a business. They cover the common activities of Business Intelligence Management, Financial Management, Human Resource Management, Information Technology Management, Marketing Management, Production Management, Service Management and, Strategic Management,
It should be noted that most of the books are either heavily skewed towards theory, which makes it difficult to put their content directly into practice, or are based on case studies of organisations which were successful in the past.
Case-study based books are also normally those which make the bestseller lists but suffer from two basic defects. Firstly, their content reflects the author's definition of success and success factors. Secondly, they use the past to suggest future "success" managerial actions. These two defects are reflected in the fact that the majority of these so-called successful companies used as examples are usually no longer so successful when looked at today. Further, that the application of these identified "success" factors in similar organisations rarely result in the required improvement.
Management books are nevertheless important and serve a valuable function as long as the reader realises that their content has to be adapted to his/her unique situation and uses their content as broad guidelines.
Fiction books are those which feature invented stories and consist of the following sub-categories:
- Horror fiction whose aim is to frighten the reader by exploiting his/her conscious and/or unconscious fears. The best known authors are Stephen King, Dean Koontz and Clive Barker.
- Mystery fiction which are usually based on a main character trying to solve a crime. It has three sub-categories which are crime, detective and spy. Successful authors in this category are John Sandford, Michael Connolly, Robert B Parker, Sue Grafton, Kathy Reichs and James Lee Burke.
- Romance fiction which usually feature a lover having to overcome great hurdles to be with the love of his life. Authors in this category are Danielle Steele, Barbara Cartland and Daphne Du Maurier.
- Science fiction/Fantasy books which have stories set in imaginary worlds using advanced technologies. This category has increased in popularity due to films such as Star Wars, Star Trek and, more recently, The Matrix and successful authors include J.K. Rowling, Arthur C. Clark, Ray Bradbury and J.R.R. Tolkien.
- Suspense/Thriller fiction which commonly features a character exposed to constant threat whilst up against a villain. The best known authors in this category are Clive Cussler, Lawrence Sanders, Frederick Forsythe, Richard North Patterson and Tom Clancy.
- Western fiction about life on the American frontier. Louis Lamour is the best known author of western fiction.
- Woman's fiction which tends to focus on relationships. They usually feature a strong woman character that triumphs in extremely difficult circumstances. Authors in this category are Judith Krantz, Rebecca Wells and Barbara Taylor Bradford.
Books on Business are distinguished from Management books in that they are slightly more of an academic nature and cover subjects which are universal Common recent examples of these are ethics, organisational structuring, the state of the world markets and international financing.
A predicted future factor whose implications will have to be catered for by all organisations is the growing counter-reaction to "Human rights" in the form of "Human responsibilities" for which a Universal Declaration has already been formulated by the InterAction Council of Political and Religious Leaders.
On a local level they also include all the books related to the legalities of running a business which are published by all relevant authorities.
Sales books cover the spectrum from organizing and managing a sales team to sales skills and are especially popular during economic downturns.
An important distinction must be made between the sales activities required when selling an object and when selling a service as it is apparent that there are two totally distinctive skill sets and procedures involved. Would you trust your friendly local car salesperson to obtain and administer your personal financial investments?
Despite this obvious difference many authors tend to adopt a "one size fits all" approach to sales and then e.g. advocate the use of their developed "closing techniques" for all sales types.
Interesting enough when you go back in history you will find that the common sales approach underlying most of the sales models today was developed for pharmaceutical representatives in the past whose job it was to deduct stock level quantities on a pharmacy shelf from their recommended levels and then to replace the sold numbers of items.
A single approach to both types of sales is doomed to failure and this must be kept in mind when buying sales books.
Used books or second-hand books vs new books: In the past buying used or second-hand books tended to have a stigma attached to it and it was not the "done thing". However, if you consider that the only difference between a good quality used book and a new book is the price then it is obvious why these types of stores have mushroomed.
Besides the cost savings, which allow you to buy even more books, an avid reader could use the opportunity to browse the store, whether it is a physical or virtual store, and thereby identify other books by his/her favourite authors. It is also a chance to become acquainted with new authors or new characters by current favourite authors.
It also allows you to buy those books which have been out of print.
Books on sale. If you still choose to buy new books then it is wise to continuously keep an eye out for sales held by the larger bookstores during which they sell new stock at a lower price. This is usually when their sales projections have not been realised and they are left with excess stock. You can either physically visit their stores, or visit their websites, on a regular basis to find out when they are having sales.
